The SHOW…

“Approaching Autumn” is a contemporary music project that explores acoustic sounds evocative of the melancholic feeling of the end of summer.  Drawing from classical, contemporary jazz, third stream, ambient and experimental music, “Approaching Autumn” is a unique musical endeavour that is focused on exploration, improvisation, and communication.  This lineup of Simon Williams (piano), Kayla Hoshizaki (Saxophone) and Ben Senyk (Drums/percussion) have played extensively over the past 2 years in Calgary, Toronto, and as students in the Humber College Bachelor of Music program and carry with them the shared experience of approaching the Toronto music scene as Albertans.  This shared experience has given these three a unique musical chemistry that appeals to jazz and contemporary audiences in both Eastern and Western Canada. 

Simon Williams (Piano, Composition, Bandleader)

Originally from Edmonton, Simon Williams is a young keyboardist and composer who has played jazz, rock, electronic, and classical music nationwide.  He is a versatile arranger, composer, recording pianist and performer focused on developing strong musical and artistic relationships across interdisciplinary boundaries.  Simon’s music is inspired heavily by Boards of Canada, Jeremy Ledbetter, and Franz Schubert.  Simon began by studying under Trumpeter Joel Gray and has since studied with Chris Andrew, Amanda Tosoff, and Robi Botos.

Kayla Hoshizaki (Saxophone, Vibraphone, Composition)

Kayla Hoshizaki is a young musician currently studying music performance at Humber College in Ontario. She has studied the saxophone for 9 years, receiving instruction from Kirk MacDonald, Alex Dean, local saxophonist Keith O’Rourke, and many more.  As well as playing saxophone, Kayla is a skilled vibraphonist and percussionist, and with her interdisciplinary musical experience, she has a unique way of exploring musical composition and performance. Her passions lie in musical performance, composition, and creating connections through music.  For this performance, Kayla will be playing Tenor Saxophone.

Ben Senyk (Drums, Percussion)

Also from Calgary, Ben Senyk is a Drummer and percussionist with an extensive background in marching band and modern jazz.  Ben’s main musical inspirations include Ari Hoenig, Bill Stewart and Larnell Lewis.  As well as being a gifted drummer, Ben is an innovative music producer and versatile composer!
