The SHOW…
The Prairie Fire Quintet features three of the most dedicated horn players south of the Milky Way
Carsten Rubeling is one of Canada’s most active and dynamic trombonists. He has studied and performed in Toronto, Berlin, and San Francisco and completed his graduate studies at the City University of New York. His debut album VOLK//PEOPLE was released in 2019 on Inner Ocean Records and has been receiving positive reviews and airplay both internationally and here at home. Carsten has performed and recorded with Sean Jones, Ingrid Jensen, Seamus Blake, Brian Lynch, Eric Bloom, Brad Turner, David Braid, Nick Fraser, Michael Kaeshammer, Jens Lindemann, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, Foothills Brass, Jann Arden and Weird Al.
Mark DeJong is active as a saxophonist throughout North America. He holds a Masters in Jazz Studies from Rugers University, and is a founding member of Calgary’s own Redline Trio. Recently he was a featured soloist with the Vancouver Symphony, the Calgary Philharmonic as well as the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra, and has toured with the internationally renowned Shuffle Demons (Panama and Cuba). He was a feature artist at the World Expo in Shanghai China, and appeared with his group Outer Bridge Ensemble at the Blue Note in New York. He has shared the stage with the likes of Sarah Slean, Laila Biali, Kenny Wheeler, Brad Turner, Rob McConnell, Moe Koffman, Ralph Bowen, Sean Jones, Hugh Fraser, and many others.
André Wickenheiser’s sound is all his own. Whether it’s the sound of his trumpet, or his compositional style, it is immediately recognizable. André Wickenheiser began his musical studies at Mount Royal University where he completed an Artist Diploma in jazz performance. From there, he went on to finish both a Bachelors Degree, and Masters Degree in jazz performance at McGill University in Montreal.
André is enjoying a busy career as a freelance musician, making a name for himself as one of the top jazz trumpet players in Canada. He is a composer/arranger, and educator performing regularly in local groups including his own André Wickenheiser Sextet, the Past Present Quintet, Lorna Maclachlan Quintet, Jon McCaslin Quartet and others.
Completing this special “drummerless” iteration of the Prairie Fire Quintet:
