Tilman Sandvoss, viola
Murray Visscher, guitar
Peter Jancewicz, composer/piano
Please join pianist Susan Hlasny, violist Tilman Sandvoss, guitarist Murray Visscher and composer/pianist Peter Jancewicz at the Asylum for Art for an evening of original and eclectic music by Peter Jancewicz.
Music to be performed will include a jazzy piano duet: Red Coat (2015) is based on the blues structure with a film-noir feel. The second movement, Mirage, was inspired by “A Thought”, by Carlo Toselli. It is in a mesmerizing minimal style. The last movement, Chickadee, was inspired by the distinctive springtime song of the chickadee. The inspiration for a smokin’ middle section came from the famous Köln Concert by Keith Jarrett.

Six Canadian Sketches (2021) was commissioned by violist Chris Sandvoss. Each piece was inspired by a Canadian painting, which include: North Shore, Lake Superior by Lawren Harris, Entre les quatre murs du vent, j’écoute-Nadaka by Jean-Paul Riopelle, Heart and Soul by Chris Sandvoss, Mount Cory by Catharine Robb Whyte, Loon by Norval Morrisseau, Flight by Paresh Athparia. The pieces are in various styles, from folk-flavoured to hard-edged contemporary, from plainchant to impressionist, as suggested by the paintings. This performance is the première.
Also a premiere will be the Ballade (2018) for guitar solo, written for and performed by Murray Visscher. A ballade is a piece that tells a story, although the music suggests the emotions and energy of the story rather than a specific plot or action. Use your imagination!
The programme will be rounded out with four pieces for solo piano, played by Peter Jancewicz.
Mobius (2020): A study in contrasts, in Mobius one hears eerie, cold, soulless melodies, themes of violence and anger, and a plaintive middle section. Written as a reaction to the invasion of Covid 19, the title refers to the Mobius strip, a loop with only one surface.
Fantasia (2010): composed in a romantic impressionist style in the style of early Debussy.
Evening Rain (2005): A meditation on a poem by Carlo Toselli about the suffering of the soul and the rain.
Baetica Variations (2008): A set of variations on a theme by Manuel de Falla from his Fantasia Baetica, which is the Roman name for the province that became Spain.
The last three pieces are included on Peter’s CD, Music for Piano.
